Over 30 years, 140 institutions, hi-tech firms and research centres have been based in the Park. Some are out of business, others have expanded and relocated their facilities, others still have stayed the course. All have shared their results with the outside world. And they continue to do so.

Thousands of scientists, researchers, businessmen and research and innovation managers have worked at AREA Science Park in Karst region of Trieste, successfully developing and delivering new ideas to both the market and final customers alike.

Their work is welcomed by many, well beyond the borderes of the Park.

Although difficult to quantify, the final outcome clearly extends across a number of areas: growth of knowledge, image, motivation and economic and occupational returns to name but a few.

These areas are difficult to assess the integration of science in our daily life requires that it becomes technology: it must turn into tangible innovation, in terms of products, processes, methods and services. In turn, innovation can only come about when science and technology are at close reach of companies as the earliest possible opportunity: only then it can be spread to the market and valued by the final customers. It is the entrepreneurial system that transforms new knowledge into success for the stakeholders.

In our case, it’s all about motivating AREA Science Park companies and research centres to involve potential clients and other stakeholders, as early as possible, in contributing to the promotion of research results, that are fast becoming innovation.

Hence the idea for two publications: one to illustrate tenants’ results within 2008, the other about 10 successful case histories at AREA Science Park.
